Toen Jan Doms ‘Threat’ in het najaar van 2021 ontwierp, had hij niet kunnen bevroeden dat de actualiteitswaarde begin 2022 zo groot zou zijn, met de toenemende oorlogsdreiging en het zich uitbreidend en steeds geavanceerder wapenarsenaal der grootmachten. Het door Doms ontworpen wandkleed ‘Threath’, waarin een straaljager dreigend een landschap doorkruist – zoals Doms ervoer in Armenië – werd in het Tilburgse TextielLab verder ontwikkeld en geproduceerd door de veelzijdige textielkunstenaar Juliane Schreiber (DE).
Het plotselinge opdoemen en verdwijnen van de militaire dreiging bracht Doms op de titel van de expositie, Stroboscope, een metafoor voor de wijze waarop ervaringen en reflecties in je hoofd opkomen, als korte flitsen, om vervolgens te stollen en te transformeren tot kunstwerken.
Behalve het wandkleed en een aantal (wand)objecten van glas en verenbandstaal, toont Doms tekeningen, foto’s en lino’s. Deze laatste laten een affiniteit zien met avantgardistisch-constructivistische tendensen zoals Doms aantrof in Lódz (POL), en Gyumri (ARM). Samen met Tilburg niet toevallig alle drie steden waar de textielindustrie ooit hoogtijdagen beleefde maar die zichzelf opnieuw moesten uitvinden. De kunsten manifesteren zich daarbij als voorhoede, in overeenstemming met hun avant-gardistische wortels.
De Armeense filosoof en hoogleraar aan Brusov State University, Davit Mosinyan, reflecteert in een doorlopend te bekijken videobericht op de expositie.

When Jan Doms conceptualized ‘Threat’ during the fall of 2021, he couldn’t have grasped his design would be so topical in January 2022, with the reviving war threat and the increasing and advancing armoury of various superpowers.The tapestry ‘Threat’ designed by Doms is dominated by a jet fighter, menacingly black, crossing a landscape – like Doms was faced with during his recent stay in Armenia, the country where he stayed for longer periods as an artist. ‘Threat’ was further developed and produced in the TextileLab Tilburg by the versatile German textile artist Juliane Schreiber.The title for the present exposition, Stroboscope, was suggested to Doms by the intermittent application of military threat as a tool of conflict – a metaphor for the flashing experiences and reflections entering his mind, and subsequently materializing and transforming into works of art.Apart from the tapestry and a number of objects made of glass and spring steel, Doms will show watercolours, photographs and linocuts. Those last show affinity with avant-gardist/constructivist works which Doms found in Lodz (Poland) and Gyumri (Armenia). By chance, like Tilburg, cities where textile industry once flourished, but now forced to reinvent themselves. Cities where the arts are manifesting themselves as an avant-garde, coinciding with their avant-gardist roots.Davit Mosinyan, Armenian philosopher and professor at Brusov State University, is reflecting Doms’ exhibition by means of a video message, to be shown during the exhibition.
The festive vernissage will take place on Saturday and Sunday 12 and 13 February, between 2-5 p.m.
